Feminism in the Arts - Film, painting & poem -

Antifeminism film – pretty woman
Pretty woman – 1990, U.S. romantic comedy
A man in a legal but hurtful business needs an escort for some social events, and hires a beautiful prostitute he meets who he eventually fall in love with.
Why is this antifeminism film?
Man offers to pay her
$3000 to spend time with him
Pay everything for what she
needs.
Broadcast of woman who has no idea about business talk
an influx of prostitutes to work within affluent areas.

The media play a critical role in communicating notions of “race” and racism. The “race” where these can be readily observed sex through film footage and pictures


Feminism in the film
1. Woman with a power
-She's Gotta Have It (1986) - The story of woman and three men, wanted her to commit solely to them; Nola resists being "owned" by a single partner.
-Rape and Marriage(1980) - A timely drama set around the 1978 court case where a woman charged her husband with rape.
-Thelma and Louise(1991) - Two gals escape from patriarchy, kill a rapist, self-actualize while on the run from the cops, and then kill themselves.
-Enough(2002)- A woman suffer from domestic violence, is forced to fight back, engaging her husband in a physical and psychological battle

2. Woman as a lesbian
-Fried Green Tomatoes (1991) - An elderly woman recounts her lesbian feminist past in hostile, rural America.
-Imagine me and you (2005)- Story of the women who falls in love with “woman” on her wedding day and finds out her sexuality.

3. Women as a successful socialist
Out of Africa (1985)- Follows the life of Karen Blixen, who establishes a plantation in Africa. Her life is Complicated by a husband of convenience and a true love, troubles on the plantation, schooling of the natives, war, and catching VD from her husband.

A League of Their Own(1992) – The dramatization
of the true story of a group of women enlisted by
the government to play baseball while the men were
in WWII. The league paved the way for new attitudes
towards women in sports.
Erin Brockovich(2000)- An unemployed single
mother becomes a legal assistant and almost
single-handedly brings down a California power
company accused of polluting a city's water supply.

Flida(2002)- A biography of the Mexican, bisexual
artist, Frida Kahlo.

Thelma and Louise Analyze


Why is this film feministic?
- Focus on man’s violence
When Thelma gets drunk,
the man attempts to rape
her and he made a fool of
them.
Woman’s power
- Louise kills rapist, also She gets her boyfriend to bring her life savings
- When a man refuses to apologize for being rude, they shoot his tanker truck which explodes

Man’s evilness

- the film describes a man as
sly as a fox, as a man who
Thelma gets along well stole her
money.
- truck driver who repeatedly makes obscene sexual gestures at them
Man’s weakness
- A police officer cries out when Louise frighten him with a gun.
